Two Community Service & Leadership $500 scholarships will be awarded in May to promote student service, leadership and civic engagement. Selection will be based on academic and co-curricular achievements, as well as character, citizenship, and leadership within the community. Deadline for application submissions is April 30, 2009.

2009 Harley's Heroes™ Tour Rolls Into Ocean State Harley-Davidson, Inc.

Ocean State Harley-Davidson is honored to host the 2009 Harley's Heroes™ Tour on May 23rd, during our Military Day event.

The mission of the Harley's Heroes™ Tour is to provide access to benefits for all veterans and show appreciation for their service and sacrifice to our country. While on the 2009 tour, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Mobile Service Offices (MSOs) will provide benefits counseling to those veterans who suffer from service-connected injuries but may never have filed a claim for benefits or have found it difficult working with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The MSO will be staffed by highly trained DAV National Service Officers, all of them wartime disabled veterans. "In the truest sense of our mission to build better lives for disabled veterans and their families, the Harley's Heroes Tour will enable the DAV to reach a greater number of veterans, better serving them and their families." said Arthur H. Wilson National Adjutant of the 1.3-million-member DAV. "Many of our youngest veterans are unaware of the benefits they have earned. Informing those veterans of their rights will be the single most important task of the DAV during the 2009 Harley Heroes Tour."

April is “Check Your Helmet" Month

As the motorcycle riding season gets fired up around the country, now is the time to make sure helmets are ready for riding. Motorcycle enthusiasts are reminded to follow a few simple rules to make sure their helmets are ready for summer riding:

1. Fit is vital – a helmet must fit properly to be effective, and not all helmets fit the same. A good fitting helmet should rest one inch above your eyebrows and shouldn’t roll forward or sideways on your head. To ensure a comfortable fit, wear a helmet for 15 minutes before making a final buying decision.
2. They don’t last forever – manufacturers and the SNELL Foundation recommend helmets be replaced every three to five years, depending on use. Glues, resins and other helmet materials break down over time and can make a helmet less effective. Every new Harley-Davidson helmet comes with a “purchased on date” sticker that can be placed under the comfort liner for a quick reference.
3. Keep it clean – a clean and well cared for helmet will protect better and longer. Use a mild soap to wash the outer shell and internal liners. Never use solvents or chemicals for cleaning as they can destroy protective coatings.
4. Mirrors are not hangers – hanging a helmet on a motorcycle’s mirror can damage the impact absorbing liner inside.
